“Oh, come on.”
“Of course we are!” he laughed, leaning up on his elbows, “I said we would, didn’t I? I never go back on my promises! We’ll see those lanterns, and you’ll finally get to live your dream.”
He smiled at her brightly.
She smiled wide, laughing before tackling him down with a hug and kissing and nuzzling him on his cheek. “You are the best! Do you know that?!”
“Oh, come on.”
Once-Ler scrambled to his feet, taking her with him and twirling her around, tangling them both in her hair. He laughed, not even caring! He kissed her cheek happily, smiling wide.
“I thought you’d be weirded out!” he admitted, “I’m so happy— and we’ll go see the lanterns, and it’ll be all romantic— This is great!”
He twirled her around a few more times, eventually stumbling and falling into the pile of hair he’d managed to spin around the two of them, laughing stupidly.
Rapunzel squealed, gripping tight as they spun and blushed once more at the kiss on her cheek.
“I don’t think you can surprise me—” But she paused with a gasp, already proving herself wrong. As they fell together in the pile she pushed some hair aside to look to him. “We’re actually going to the lanterns? You really mean it?!”
“Oh, come on.”
Once-Ler’s eyes widened and he looked at her.
“You do?!” he gasped, “You feel the same?!”
He laughed, throwing his arms into the air, fedora flying into the grass. He lunged at Rapunzel and wrapped his long arms around her, sitting up on his knees and tightly hugging her arms to her waist.
“You don’t know how happy that makes me!” he exclaimed.
She laughed at his animated gestures and was crushed for a moment in the sudden hug. But it was all so right she didn’t care and managed to wriggled her arms free to return the hug and nuzzle under his chin.
She thought about it, how much he’s managed to matter in her life. How much she cared about him and…well loved him. She wondered if it was the right time to tell him about her hair. But as soon as she considered she instantly backed down. No. Not the right time. He doesn’t need to know. No need to ruin anything yet..
“Oh, come on.”
“Well I wanted to say… I… love… you,” he said, letting out a nervous chuckle and swallowing hard, “I love you… a lot. Like, ever since I first saw you. I just think you’re great— no, not great— awesome! No… Augh!”
He flushed, pulling his fedora down and shoving his face into it.
“I’m in love with you,” he murmured, his voice muffled, “In love with everything you are and all the things you do.”
Rapunzel flushed deeply, watching as he talked. Her heart was fluttering and her hands slowly clasped together. She smiled and she wasn’t even sure why but it felt like such a relief to hear this because.. Because..
She giggled and leaned forward, pulling the fedora down, “I feel the same! I really think I do!”
